Chuffed. Again.

Heading along the coffin trail in the Lake district is more fun than it probably was a couple of centuries ago when the dead were carried from a churchless village to another that had one. James Richards and James Brickell lap up the flagstones. Shooting the Lakes was a thrill for me -all that green moss and slabby stone. This bit of trail shouted England so loud I had to shoot it, bringing in the gnurled tree bough above to add composition and make it look like I was a stalker. Leica M8. Voigtlander 15/4.5

Chuffed is appropriate here. Another cover on Bike mag, plus a whopping 12 page story inside. Chuffed indeed.

Y’ see, years ago when I started capturing mountain biking on film my ambition was to have a shot in Bike. That happened in 2004, when I won their inaugural photo of the year award. Then my ambition was to get a cover on Bike. It happened three years later. So why all the fuss about another cover on Bike? There’s a theme here you may have noticed.

Well, as many photographers know, Bike mag in the USA is a pretty tight ship to smuggle yourself aboard. Its photo selection is second to none. It always has been, even back in the early ’90s when as we meddled with the first suspension forks (yep, a whole 35mm of travel) Bike mag was there for us. to keep the ‘stoke factor’ (known as chuff potential in the UK) fires burning. OK, enough with the flowery metaphors. But that’s how it was. Bike mag stood out. Reading that mag and pawing over its photos was like thumbing through a brochure for life’s best bits (did I really say enough of the flowery metaphors?). In fact a couple of years ago when we were down in Finale Ligura shooting a trail feature for a UK mag and we were blasting dusty, fluid, sinously singletrack, a rider friend of mine screamed out “wow, its like having pages of Bike turning before my eyes”.  That’s what Bike is to mountain bikers. Getting content in the mag and on the front is perhaps one of the highest accolades for photo-chimps like me. Just when you’re feeling down, it brings you right back up again, or as good an up you can get legally. And it makes you want to go and shoot more.

So yes chuffed to bits is how I found myself last week when I was handed the latest issue of Bike that sports my (surprise) cover shot and 12 pages of my story, all shot with my now trusty Leica M8. Chuffed? Well, it would be rude not to be wouldn’t it.

And here is the rest of the story...

  1. Good to hear you’re “chuffed to bits.”

    • Chuffed is where it’s at Garry. And I need a lot more chuffing in my life.
