Singletrack magazine Readers Award ‘Best photo 2008’.

Filed under: bike — danmilner @ 6:55 pm

Well, I knew I was in the running but never quite got confirmation on who won the Singletrack magazine’s ‘Best Photo 2008’ award at the end of last year. That is until today, when a neatly packaged box arrived with a splendid trophy inside.  Nice surprise that one, and needless to say I’m chuffed. The award follows winning Bike magazine’s Photo of the year award in 2003, so you can see these things don’t necessarily get handed out every week. The shot (below), contrary to the speculation of it being “another Chamonix” trail, was taken in Pila, Italy, on an epic trail we found after leaving the bike park trails and going looking for  something, well, a little more rewarding. We found it: a trail that drops some 1400 metres vertical, almost all of it on technical singletrack. The shot made the cover of Singletrack mag and was one of only two images I took on the whole descent, having gone to Pila to ride rather than work (hey, even photo chimps have days off, or try to) and was taken with my Leica M8 rangefinder with a Voigtlander 15mm/f4.5 lens (20mm equivalent on the Leica M8). That camera just keeps on turning out the goods and this is the third cover I have landed with the M8. Anyway so to not take all the glory, the riders in the shot are Mike Foster and Jez Wilson, two good friends who rarely refuse my incessant begging to “just ride that again will ya?” Without riders, of course we’d all be landscape photographers.

The original and the Singletrack cover.. who wouldn't want to ride that one?

  1. Snaked again. “ooh, Dans got his camera out, whats this bright jacket I’ve found in my backpack?” I’m on to you Foster

    • Could this be the start of the jacket wars? I think even Jez will be upping the ante when the recent UK trip photos are posted, grey jacket or no grey jacket.

    • What you need Jez, is a figure-hugging all in one satin body suit in pink and silver with nipple tassels and a huge gold fur collar. You could wear it with a orange satin fedora hat with ostrich feathers sticking out of the hat band. Get Lisa to knock it up for you!
