Snowboarding in Africa

Filed under: snow — danmilner @ 12:31 pm

Africa doesn’t usually feature high on anyone’s list of places to snowboard, but prompted into action by great experiences while riding bikes in the Atlas mountains of Morocco, i thought it was time to see what snowboarding in this North Africa country would be like. Accompanied by Brit pro rider Ed Gunn and French pro riders Jean-Jacques Roux and Bruno Rivoire (yes, the same Bruno Rivoire that appeared on the cover of Snowboard UK magazine following our trip to Pakistan), we hit the snow-resort of Oukaimeden. Needless to say the locals were great, friendly and hospitable, though freezing rain on our arrival spelt icy conditions for the whole week. the resort is high, topping out at over 3200 Metres, meaning hiking tested our resolve. The riders did what they are paid to and we came back with a bag of shots and a head full of rewarding memories: thats what foreign trips should be. Expect to see the feature gracing the pages of several publications in the UK and USA next winter.
